Your 5-minute monthly check

Most HVAC issues start small. Five minutes once a month is usually enough to catch them before they become a call-out.

Filters

  • Check standard filters every month
  • Replace or clean every 1-3 months
  • Hold up to a light: if you can't see through, change it
  • Pets and dust shorten the interval

Indoor unit

  • Wipe vents and grilles with a dry cloth
  • Keep 60cm clearance from furniture and curtains
  • Listen for new noises: rattles, hums, hissing
  • Check the condensate tray is clear

Outdoor unit

  • Keep 0.5m clearance on all sides
  • Clear leaves, grass, snow, cobwebs
  • Don't tarp it in winter, traps moisture
  • Hose fins gently, never pressure wash

Controls

  • Replace remote batteries annually
  • Update firmware on smart controllers
  • Adjust schedule each season
  • Smaller, frequent tweaks beat big swings
